COMP 1217 – Computer Applications I is a first course in computer applications designed for students in need of fundamental computer skills including the use of an operating system, the basics of email, internet, file management and word processing.
NSCC recognizes that incoming students have a wide range of computing skills. We try to tailor COMP 1217 to enhance student's success at NSCC. You may not be required to take the course if you can prove that you've met the course learning outcomes.
For students with prior computing experience, we offer a COMP 1217 Challenge Assessment at the start of the term. The assessment will take place in a computer lab using a Microsoft Office 2010 simulation and two practical assessments. If you pass all modules from the assessment you can choose to not take the course. You will receive an "RPL" (indicating Recognition of Prior Learning). If you pass some of the modules, you also have the opportunity to complete a learning contract enabling you to take only those modules of COMP 1217 that you have not successfully challenged. If you do not take the assessment or if you do not pass the assessment, you will take the course in the normal class format.
COMP 1217 is a required course in many of the programs offered at NSCC. If your program requires COMP 1217, you should have received a letter from your campus indicating the COMP 1217 Challenge schedule.
If you have any questions about your eligibility for COMP 1217 Challenge assessment, please contact your campus.
